Margery Cohen’s
Stream of Self-Consciousness
October 5 to November 8, 2025
Opening Reception, Sunday, October 5, 4 PM – 6 PM

Galerie Lucida is pleased to present Stream of Self-Consciousness, a solo exhibition of visionary ceramic sculptures and whimsical paintings on paper by local artist, Margery Cohen. The exhibition will run from October 5 to November 8 with a reception for the artist on Sunday, October 5, from 4 PM to 6 PM, at Galerie Lucida, where Cohen will be painting live in our main gallery.
Margery Cohen, a Red Bank resident and Monmouth County native, is a self-taught ceramicist who began working with clay as a means to better realize the fantastical figures that had been appearing in her paintings. Inspired by a deep reverence of the natural world, and haunted daily by thoughts of animal mistreatment and environmental damage, she creates eccentric, joyful animals and mythical human figures, perhaps in an attempt to rectify sorrow.
Cohen says, “I make art because it’s what I do best. Supplies were given to me to indulge myself from the time I can remember. As an adult, drawing, painting, sculpting, fixing and making things is not only an expression of myself, it’s a need – like breathing, sleeping and eating. I don’t really think about it much, I just get up every morning and start making things out of clay. The artwork tells me what it wants to be as I work on it. Structure, form and composition seem to be my main concerns and the product seems to come out of my hands, not my head.”
Stream of Self-Consciousness invites viewers to enter Margery’s world and rejoice in her optimistic inventiveness and spectacular creations.
